24-yr-old escaped detainee, re-arraigned for damaging police cell

An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, remanded a 24-year-old man, Seun Olamilekan, at Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, after pleading guilty to breaking police cell. Olamilekan, whose address is unknown, is arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, damage and escaping from lawful custody.

After pleading guilty to the charges, the Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, said the accused should be kept behind bars pending judgement. Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Essien Ndarake, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 31 at Alagbado Police Station, Lagos.

He said the accused, with another still at large, damaged the cell’s burglar proof in a bid to escape. Ndarake said: “The accused damaged the iron rod of the cell gate to escape at night.” Ndarake said the accused, who was arrested and detained over alleged stealing, was later found roaming about at Abule-Iroko in Ogun.
He said: “A surveillance team moved immediately to the place and ambushed him. Even on his way to Lagos, the accused jumped down from the vehicle and took to his heels, but he was given a chase and re-arrested.”

The offences contravened Sections 106 (a), 348 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, with Section 106(a) providing a seven-year imprisonment. Sections 348 and 409 prescribe two years each for offenders. The case was adjourned to July 5 for facts and sentence.
