Profuse weeping by residents of Awai area(s) on Thursday
unsettled Asaba in Delta State when a tipper lorry allegedly crushed to
death a 6 year-old primary school student identified as Emmanuel Okoh.
It was gathered that the victim who is a primary one pupil of a private school located behind Ibori Golf Club,
Asaba, was allegedly killed by the reckless driver of the tipper lorry who was reportedly on top speed on the high way when the victim made an attempt to cross the expressway, unfortunately unsuccessful.
Family member and an eye witness, Kate Okafor told our correspondent that he was eating and the father ordered him to quickly go to school, a stone throw from his house to the school, unknown to him it was the last day for the victim on earth.
But the Police Image maker in the state who confirmed the incident, Mrs. Celestina Kalu said the driver of the tipper lorry was arrested, adding that he is helping the police at the State CID for investigation.
She said that the top speed of the driver made it impossible for him to apply his break during the attempt of the victim to cross the Expressway.
While neighbours within Awai community are still recovering from the shock in the death of the pupil, investigation revealed that no fewer than eight persons have been reportedly killed through reckless tipper lorry drivers in the past three months on the Asaba – Awai Ugbolu Expressway.
Residents, one of them, Mrs. Mary Agile who spoke to our correspondent, called on the state government to ban tipper drivers in the state saying that they have been killer drivers on the roads.
He noted that, in every state of the federation there are not less than 40 different solid mineral which if properly tapped would provide employment and income to the country.
He however promised that, a detailed report of those identified mineral resources would soon be published and made available and accessible to national and foreign investors.
In his opening speech the national president of NACIMM Chief Dr Bassey E.O Edem commended Jigawa state governor and entire people of the state for the warm hospitality accorded to them which made them feel at home.
“Our association is also proud to associate and identify with the laudable achievement recorded by governor Badaru who is also our family member”.
