Armed gunmen, suspected to be sea pirates, yesterday threw
the Foropa community of Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa
State into confusion with a deadly attack on a military checkpoint and
killing of three soldiers.
The soldiers, who were attached to the Niger Delta Security Task Force, Operation Pulo Shield (OPS), were attacked at about 1am yesterday by two boats loaded with armed sea pirates.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the sea pirates, after the cold blooded attack, reportedly carted away two AK47 riffles, a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and other ammunition at the Foropa checkpoint.
It was gathered from community sources that the soldiers were caught unawares by the suspected sea pirates.
“It was a one-sided shooting. But calls were quickly made to the military base in Ogbinbiri and they came to evacuate the bodies of the slain soldiers.”
