A Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a 28-year-old man, Samuel Iliya, to one week in prison for burglary and attempt to steal.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tijanni Zololo, gave the sentence after Iliya of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the crime and begged for leniency.
Zololo said that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.
He, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N2,000
.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Yange Terzugwe, told the court that Jugu Abdul of Main Street, Federal Lowcost, Jos, reported the matter at the Rantya Police Station on Feb. 26.
Terzugwe said that the convict unlawfully entered the complainant’s house and tried to steal but was apprehended.
“He jumped into the house through the fence and used a pestle to break a window to gain entrance into the main house.
“He was immediately apprehended by vigilant neighbours and was taken to the police station,’’ he said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 346 and 95 of the Penal Code.
