Unknown gunmen on Saturday beheaded the the chairman of All
Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 4, Omoku, in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local
government area of Rivers State, Mr. Franklin Obi.
The gunmen, who invaded the Obi residence, along Rutachi Street,
Omoku, at about 9:00pm, also murdered his wife, Ihuoma Obi and their
18-year old son, Bestman.
Sources said that the some of the hoodlums were seen by some members of the community before the incident, even as the teenage daughter of the deceased, named Victory, who witnessed the incident, said she saw how the hoodlums cut off her father’s head and took it away.
Speaking amid tears, Victory, who is about 16 years old, said she hid somewhere in the room, from where she peeped through and saw how the gunmen were cutting off her father’s head.
“Last night, I was inside when I heard my mum crying. We heard the sound of a gunshot somewhere in the room. I opened the curtain of my room and I saw the men cutting off my father’s head.
“They (gunmen) then came to our room and ordered me and my brother to come out and as we were coming, my brother was moving slowly so they shot him. They then left with my father’s head.”
However, the state police commissioner, Mr. Musa Kimo, who visited the home of the deceased, expressed sadness that some of the people of the area, who had earlier sighted some of the masked gunmen, did not call the police.
Kimo, who described the gruesome murder of the trio as ‘sad, bad, insane and totally unacceptable,’ called on the public to assist the police with useful information.
The police commissioner said: “I am here in Omoku this time on a said note. On assumption of duty on September 5, 2015, this is the third time I am coming to Omoku; this time around, it is on a sad note. Sad in the sense that we are all bereaved.
“You will recall that two weeks ago, myself, the governor, and other service commanders were in Omoku for a peace meeting. Unfortunately, violence has continued to pervade resulting in kidnapping and murder.
“Last night, precisely 21:00hours, one Franklyn Obi APC, chairman, Ward 4, Omoku, and his wife were gruesomely murdered in their house. This is sad, this is bad, this is insane and totally unacceptable.
“I am therefore here on a condolence visit to commiserate with the family and to assist in the security situation here in Omoku, with the view to restrategizing, to putting cogent security measures in place in order to forestall future occurrences.”
He, however, said that investigation into the killings in Omoku, including Saturday’s murder of Franklin Obi, his wife and son, were ongoing, adding that the police was not relenting in ensuring that those behind the dastardly act were arrested and brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the APC has described as shocking the gruesome murder of its ward chairman in Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the state, along with his wife and son.
