THERE is outrage in Bayelsa State over the bombing of Nigeria Agip
Oil Company (NAOC) pipeline in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa
State, Friday night by gunmen.
Checks indicated that the gunmen had used dynamite to blow up the Agip truck line at Kpongbokiri, Brass Island.
The damage to the pipeline, which supplies gas and crude oil, sources said, would affect power supply in the area. The latest bombing of another Agip pipeline in the same area is now a source of concern to stakeholders in Brass, who also tasked security agencies to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to book.
Speaking on the incident, the member representing Brass Constituency 1 in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon Israel Sunny-Goli condemned the bombing. He described the incident as an act of sabotage carried out
to hurt the economic interests of Bayelsa State and Nigeria, noting that it was capable of forcing oil companies out of operation, which would have adverse effect on the country’s economy.
Sunny-Goli called on security agencies to beef up security around oil facilities, to prevent future attacks by economic saboteurs bent on crippling Nigeria’s economy.
His words “I want to condemn the latest attack on Agip pipeline at Kpongbokiri. This is a clear sabotage by economic saboteurs.
Recently. They blasted the pipeline at Orukari and Golubokiri. I condemn this latest attack on Agip pipeline at pongbokiri. It is sabotage against Nigeria in a bid to cripple the economy at a time the nation is struggling with decline in revenue due to the fall in oil prices. It is common knowledge that because of the low price of oil, many states can hardly pay workers salaries. If these attacks are not checked and the perpetrators brought to book and Agip decides to pull out of Bayelsa State, it would be disastrous for us as a people. Bayelsa State is an oil producing state and our revenue from the federal government is based on our quota of production but this would be reduced if Agip decides to pull out because incessant attacks on its facilities are not stopped.
I want to urge security agencies to probe the attack on Agip pipeline and ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to book.” He urged Bayelsans, especially those that have oil facilities around them, to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement to security agencies to prevent further attacks.
In the same vein, the Niger Delta Renaissance Movement (NDRM), in a statement signed by Gabriel Elliot and Ebri Emmanuel, president and secretary, called on security agencies to investigate the bombing of Agip pipeline in Brass and bring the perpetrators to book and urged the federal government to crack down on economic saboteurs.
