Police probe death of family of five

The men of the Ogun State Police command on Wednesday commenced investigation into the fire incident which consumed a family of five in Abule Ake in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta South Local Government Area.
It will be recalled that on Sunday, five members of a nuclear family were burnt beyond recognition in the inferno.
The victims were the 45-year-old head of the family, Michael Oloroku; his 44-year-old wife, Elizabeth; and their three children; Racheal, Victoria and Esther.
It was gathered that Michael, who had had a disagreement with his wife, a member of staff of the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, came home that night and sprayed the building with petrol and set the building on fire while other family members were asleep.
The husband was also reportedly caught in the fire before he could escape from the scene.
While his family members reportedly died in the fire, Michael died on his way to the Ijaiye General Hospital in Abeokuta.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police had yet to get to the root of the matter.
He explained that the state Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, had commiserated with members of the family and warned residents of the state to stop keeping inflammable materials in their homes.
He said, “The incident happened around 11.30pm on Sunday and we have commenced investigation into the matter.
“We have yet to know the source of the fire, but the CP has advised residents not to keep inflammable materials in their houses.”
A member of the Oloruku family, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that there had been a lingering feud between Michael and his wife, which made the wife to abandon him and move to a house she had built.
It was learnt that the woman, who was the breadwinner of the family, got angry when she got information that her husband was planning to bring in a new wife.
Michael, who was apparently not happy with his wife for packing away from home, stormed the building and set it ablaze.
