At least 7 Boko Haram terrorists were killed and several others arrested on Friday after a heavy gunbattle between the insurgents and troops of the Nigeria army in Gwoza, Borno state, officials said.
Gwoza was once the so-called headquarters of Boko Haram.
The terrorists, according to army officials, had made a desperate attempt to show relevanve by attacking soldiers in Gwoza town, 200km away from Maiduguri, the state caputal.
“But were effectively repelled by soldiers on ground”, said spokesman of the 7 Division, Colonel Tukur Gusau.
The army spokesman said 7 members of Boko Haram were killed during the shotout that took placced at about 5am.
Talking to journalists on the development at the Operation Lafiya Dole media centre, in Maiduguri, Colonel Gusau said some recovery of arms were made from the killed and fleeing terrorists.
“The desperate attack today was a failed attempt to project an image of strength; it is part of the last struggles of a dying evil”, said Gusau.
He said items recovered from the terrorists comprised one Toyota Hilux vehicle, 11 AK-47 rifles, 1 Shilka Gun, 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade Tube, 6 Hand Grenades and several rounds of Shilka Gun and Machine Gun ammunitions.
He said troops were on the chase of fleeing terrorists while air raid were sustained around Sambisa forest.
“Boko Haram terrorists’ ability as a coherent fighting force has been degraded over time by troops through relentless attacks, patrols and aerial bombardments.
The army deputy director Army Public Relations added that Troops of 7 Division Garrison and 112 Task Force Battalion had on Thursday, while on patrol, recovered weapons in Busheshe village in Mafa axis.
“The weapons recovered comprised two Hillux vans; two anti aircraft guns; three 81 milimeter bombs, 160 milimeter bombs; 20 ammunition boxes
21 rocket propelled guns; large quantity of 7.62 milimeter special ammunition and a cache of different calibre of ammunitions.
“During the operations one of our soldiers was wounded but on a stable condition and currently in our hospital receiving medical care”.
