Building contractor in court over N2m fraud

A 47-year-old building contractor, Lekan Oyewole, who allegedly obtained the sum of N3.5 million by false pretences, on Thursday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Oyewole, whose residential address was not stated, is facing a three-count charge of obtaining by false pretence, conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Ighodalo Daniel, told the court that Oyewole and others at large committed the offences between March 10 and June 20, at No. 2, Community Road, Akoka, Lagos.
He alleged that Oyewole defrauded three complainants, Deba Emwinma, Nosa Ademola and Orhue Emokaro of N3.5 million under the pretext of preparing a survey plan and carrying out construction on their sites.
Daniel said that the accused, in a ploy to get more money from the complainants, promised to help them test the soil on their plots of land and get documents for land approval.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 312 prescribes 15 years imprisonment for a person convicted of obtaining by false pretence.
Oyewole, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mrs Folashade Botoku, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Dec. 16 for trial. (NAN)
